HILARIUS HOFSTEDE
Author & Artist
Hilarius Hofstede (b. 1965) is a Dutch multimedia artist and author whose work fuses literature, visual art, music, and performance into a singular practice. His books include Pop Killer, a manifesto against the spectacle of celebrity and consumer culture, and De Markies van Water, a monumental prose-poem-novel where myth and pop debris collide in torrents of language. Both works exemplify Hofstede’s hybrid, rhythm-driven style, in which language functions as ritual as much as communication.
Hofstede co-founded and edited the influential journal Paleo Psycho Pop (1996–2020), extending his kaleidoscopic vision to an international readership. He also initiated the traveling collective Bison Caravan, staging nomadic exhibitions that combine art, music, and performance across different international cities. Recently, he contributed lyrics to Joe Bowie’s solo album Allergy for the U.S. Hofstede’s practice continues to blur the line between literature, ritual, and installation, offering audiences experiences that are transformative and wildly inventive.
